Plan Keeps Rates Down

PRIORITISING where and how infrastructure and services are delivered is a key component of the new Regional Sustainability Strategy.

Mackay Regional Council yesterday adopted the strategy -- the Alternative Future -- which has a focus on keeping rates down.

Chief executive officer Barry Omundson said planning for the RSS began about a year ago.

"It seeks to link our land use planning with the provision of infrastructure and the funding together, so that we have the least impact on rates going forward as we possibly can," he said.

Mr Omundson said business as usual was no longer affordable.

"We need to provide a growth pattern that allows us to keep rates down and be able to afford services for the community," he said.

The strategy will be released early next year.

"The RSS has been able to give us more information and more certainty about delivery of infrastructure," Mr Omundson said. …
