SNUGGLING up to its mother, this was the moment that a Farne Island pup became the latest member of Northumberland's grey seal colony.

Captured on camera, the youngster entered into the world on a windswept pebble beach - and received a loving kiss from its mum.

"I was out on the Glad Tidings V boat from Seahouses on the one-anda-half hour seal trip around the islands," said Dr Jacqui Mair, 40, a behavioural ecologist and full-time mum from Newcastle.

"It was a grey, drizzly day but thankfully the wind from the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo had passed and the sea was fine to sail.

"The trip took us around the islands out towards the Longstone Lighthouse.

"There were lots of seals in the sea and pebble beaches, and we sailed by a number of grey seals on a pebble beach on one of the small Outer Farne Islands.

"The boat turned and as we sailed by again one of the females on the beach had just given birth to her pup. …
