Meeting Making Waves; Great Barrier Reef Swim Back to Its Best, Says Mackay Swim Stalwart

SWIMMING: Mackay swimming stalwart Pat Wright says this year's Great Barrier Reef Swim Meet was one of the best in the event's recent history.

More than 200 swimmers met at Memorial Swim Centre for the 41st edition of the meeting, with swimmers from Townsville to New South Wales making the journey.

Wright said the meeting had lulled in recent years, but the recent push for state qualifying times meant swimmers were drawn to it as a means for progression in the sport.

"It used to be a really big meet but with swimming deteriorating just a little bit it started to lose a little bit of momentum with travel costs and everything these days, but now we've taken a step forward," Wright said.

"I think the thing that was so noticeable to us was the number of people that were down the sides of the pool watching the event. I haven't seen it like that for probably five years.

"It's bouncing back and we may not have the big quality in there just yet but providing we keep nurturing it along we will have. …
