IT IS Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Mal Forman's goal to make the elderly better protected in natural disasters, and he is a step closer to making that a reality.

Cr Forman said his motion, Aged Care - Enhanced Aged Care Service Provider Disaster Planning, which was put to the vote during yesterday's Local Government Association of Queensland conference was crucial.

The motion was carried unanimously by more than 200 delegates at the meeting in Mackay, and Cr Forman could not have been prouder.

Although there were no objections to the motion before it was put to the vote, Cr Forman addressed the conference to explain why this matter was important for all communities.

He spoke of what his council had learned from the evacuation of three aged-care facilities during the ex-tropical cyclone Oswald disaster.

"It was evident that (there were) insufficient transport arrangements for evacuated residents, insufficient identification and medical details accompanying evacuated residents. …
