WITH his two main rivals Gary Wilson and Elliot Slessor competing in a pro-am in Germany, Gateshead's John Astley took full advantage to claim first prize in Gateshead SC's monthly one-day handicapped event.

The new professional claimed a close-fought 3-2 victory over Wallsend's Billy Hunter.

Not making the most of his 21-points-a-frame start, Hunter failed to make the most of his chances and finished up losing the opener 63-43 to Astley's late run of 38.

A promising break of 43 in the next put the Wallsend cueist in the driving seat, but it was Astley's small breaks in the 20s plus a 25 clearance which earned him the frame 75-72 and a 2-0 lead.

After winning the tactical third 70-45 without making any sizeable breaks, Hunter produced a well-constructed 81 to win the fourth 102-6 to make the final a one-frame sudden-death shoot-out - which Astley won 73-41 with the help of a small 29.

While Astley was conceding 21 points a frame to his semi-final opponent Stanley's Mike Todd and winning 3-0, Hunter had to go all the way to beat Ray Humphries 3-2. …
