LAIDLEY'S spin bowling all-rounder Alex Welsh has listed being the competition's leading wicket-taker as a personal goal, behind reclaiming the long-form cricket title again with the Blue Dogs.

He could have some extra competition however when his good friends and fellow Yorkshireman Ben Sanderson arrives from the UK.

"It looks like he's coming," Welsh said.

Sanderson has played several first-class games for Yorkshire and "a fair few Twenty20s," Welsh said.

"He's a bowling all-rounder of decent pace. He'd be the quickest in our comp."

Different mindsets

AS A spin bowler, Alex Welsh gave Phantom a great insight into the difference between his type of bowling in Australia and England.

It all comes back to the different mindset, with the Aussies willing to take a risk to try and dominate while conservative Englishmen focus on trying not to get out.

"You just can't be afraid here," Welsh said of bowling to Aussies.

"The way Aussies play spin is completely different.

"Australians are a lot more positive.

"In England, when a spinner comes on it's maiden, maiden, maiden.

"It's a different mentality here.

"Aussies are more positive and a little bit more arrogant.

"But as a bowler that gives you more chance to take wickets, though you might go for a bit more.

"The Aussie mentality is 'Let's have a crack.' It doesn't matter what the situation is."

Twin battle with punch

THINGS are heating up ahead of the amateur fight of the century between Kerr twins Shane and Justin.

With Justin a couple of stones heavier than Shane it is shaping as a contrast in approaches.

Shane wants it to go the distance because he reckons his fitness will win out.

Justin, meanwhile, doesn't move around the ring too much.

He stands still waiting for the knockout punch, knowing his brother will come at him at some stage. …
