Patrick James ESTATE cars have come a long way in just a few years.

Manufacturers are not very keen these days in using the term, preferring sportwagon, tourer or various other phrases.

It is perhaps seen as a move to redefine the cars in the face of the onslaught of the crossover phenomonen which are grabbing so many sales.

So they become a lifestyle option rather than a load lugger and the styling gurus have turned their brains and artistic talent to making them ever more desirable even if they are not quite as practical.

Mazda's tourer is no exception. The Mazda6 saloon is a fine looking car and the elongated Tourer version does not suffer by comparison. It also has the feel of a premium model on the inside.

Sleek, sharp lines, with inbuilt roofbars and a sloping roofline make it hard to define from its saloon sibling from afar.

Sitting on smart 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, other exterior features include door mirrors with integrated indicators and fog light either side of the iconic Mazda grille.

The design is not just to make it look good, it is all part of Mazda's SKYACTIV technology, which increases fuel efficiency and engine output with a new breed of engines which include stop/start systems, uprated transmissions, more rigid body and chassis and improved driving dynamics.

It also includes a brake energy regeneration system which further boosts economy, by up to 10% says Mazda. The spacious interior is classy and comfortable while the windscreen pillars have been repositioned for better all-round vision. It offers five seats and generous stowage space.

The range-topping model here features, luxury leather interior in black with silver trim around the dials, gearknob and pedals.
