Marina Centre of Pat's Life; Scene of His Work and Play

WHETHER it's work or play, for Pat Laws it always involves the water and on good days, fishing.

Mr Laws is lucky enough to spend most of his week in his favourite place in Gladstone - the marina.

An employee of AB Marine Services, Mr Laws has combined his love of fishing with his occupation.

And so it's easy to see why he can't wipe the smile from his face.

"Inside Gladstone the marina would definitely be my favourite place," he said.

"Offshore, it would definitely be Sykes Reef. The water is beautiful and clean. You can't see land in any direction. It is the ultimate escape."

Mr Laws, a volunteer committee member with HookUp for the past decade, has established himself as a local fishing guru.

When quizzed as to why he loves to throw in a line, the answer is the universality of the sport.

"Anyone can do it," he said.

"It doesn't matter whether you're young or old, it teaches you to have an appreciation of marine life and the waterways. …
