Bells Ring out for First Turtle Ashore

THE first turtle of the season has come ashore at Mon Repos and bells around the region began ringing at noon yesterday in celebration.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said more than 20 schools were participating in ringing their old bells this year, joining the annual tradition started by Bundaberg's Anglican Christ Church.

"This year's ringing of the bells ceremony will literally be a community-wide affair with schools all over Bundaberg region joining in," Mr Bennett said.

"Everyone looks forward to the return of the turtles each year and this year's welcome will be the best ever. I'm delighted that the schools are taking part."

Mon Repos Centre ranger Cathy Gatley said the first turtle of the season was spotted on Saturday night.

"She was a flatback turtle that came ashore on the southern end of Mon Repos beach over the weekend and again on Monday night," she said.

"She did not nest but that's also normal behaviour and volunteers will be out every night to keep track of her and the other turtles which won't be too far away. …
