BENNy'S BIG WIN; Halo Horse Gives Connections a Big Thrill at Ooralea on Cup Day

RACING: Everyone with a passion for racing wants to have a win on Melbourne Cup Day, be it as a punter, a jockey or an owner.

And whether you're at the racing motherland of Flemington, on the dusty plains of Alice Springs or in Mackay, a win on the big day is super sweet.

Part-owner Tony Gibson's Benny's Halo, trained by Wayne Pomfrett, won the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1200m) at yesterday's Mackay Turf Club meeting.

It may not have had millions of dollars riding on it like the 22 Melbourne Cup starters, but Gibson couldn't wipe the smile off his face nonetheless.

"We're a bit chuffed," Gibson said.

"For our stable -- we've got a very small stable with only half a dozen horses and about half a dozen workers -- to have a win on Melbourne Cup Day is fantastic."

Gibson didn't expect much from Benny's Halo at only his eighth start for the stable and off the back of a four-month spell.

He had only placed a couple of times for Pomfrett last preparation, but Gibson was buoyed by the six-year-old gelding's run at Ooralea yesterday. …
