New Driver Helps Steer Golfer to First Taxi Title

FORMER taxi driver Hubert Sperandio is now a national golfing champion.

Sperandio, 79, drove a taxi on the night shift for more than 20 years before his retirement eight years ago.

The Mackay Golf Club member last month put his other driving skills to good use to win the legends 75-plus title at the Australian Taxi Championships played at the Nelson Bay Golf Club at Port Stephens, north of Sydney.

Sperandio took out the title with a gross score of 263 over three rounds.

He also finished runner-up in the A-grade net event with 221 total.

"I have played this tournament for a number of years now," he said.

"They have it every year all over the place and next year it's at Adelaide.

"They had more than 300 players, along with lady players."

Sperandio played in the A-grade division, with his handicap of 14 at the upper limit. …
