NOTHING in Australian racing could hope to compare with the Melbourne Cup.

But Toowoomba Turf Club is looking for inspiration from Australia's greatest racing carnival as it continues planning for its elevation to the national racing spotlight in 2015.

The club is preparing for its richest race day in Toowoomba racing history when it hosts a new-look Weetwood Handicap meeting at Clifford Park on May 2.

The iconic Weetwood will become part of a revamped Racing Queensland winter carnival program.

The $150,000 Listed sprint will spearhead a $685,000 Clifford Park race day that will be Queensland's major Saturday afternoon

meeting.

Toowoomba's "stand-alone" winter carnival status places it alongside fellow provincial clubs at Ipswich and the Gold and Sunshine coasts already hosting similar major race days.

The eight-race program will be highlighted by four features.

Alongside the 1200-metre Weetwood will be the $100,000 Toowoomba Cup (2150m).

Also featuring is the Listed $100,000 Dalrello Stakes for two-year-olds at set weights over 1200 metres.

The meeting will also include the re-introduced $75,000 Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) for three-year-olds.

TTC chief executive officer Blair Odgers said recognition of Toowoomba with a major race day was a huge breakthrough for the club, Toowoomba racing industry and the community.

"With our successful Melbourne Cup day behind us, we now move on to our feature New Year's Eve meeting and from there to our May 2 Weetwood day," Odgers said yesterday. …
