Irish Are Smiling after Triumph at Chatton; GAME ANGLING

FOLLOWING the success of last year's National Bank Fly-Fishing Competition at Chatton, the fishery hosted this year's Home Nations championship.

Ireland took top spot with 39,740 fish points; England were second with 37,340; Wales finished third with 23,540 points; and Scotland came fourth with 22,500.

Ryan Matthews of England was top individual with 10 fish and also won the trophy for the longest fish.

Chatton also hosted a heat of the Fritz 'n' Flies Fun Competition on Sunday, with Mark Howard taking first place.

Steve Cochrane was second, with Scott Nellins third, Jim Tuck fourth, Lee Cartmel fifth and Robbie Bell finishing in sixth spot.

Ladhope Fishing Club visited the fishery on Saturday and enjoyed good sport with quality fish brought to the net.

Among anglers who recorded good bags were Gareth Tilley from Durham, who kept five to 5lb and returned 13; Kevin Straughen from Stakeford, who kept four for 19lb and returned 10; Mick Brown from Bedlington (13); and David Kay from Morpeth and Matty Devine from Hadston (12 each).

Stuart Baillie from Twizell kept five and returned five; Steve Bilborough from Cramlington and Trevor Wadds from Craster had 10 each; and Neil Turnbull from Ashington and Peter Davison from New Hartley netted nine each.

Robert Hope from Whitley Bay landed a personal best 8lb 5oz at Thrunton Long Crag, while Keith Morley from Newton Aycliffe released 12 and lost eight; and Stanley anglers Lee Telford and Dale Rafferty had eight each, with Lee releasing a 13lb rainbow and Dale one at 8lb.

Regular Joe Brown from Bedlington landed 14 to 9lb over two visits; John Cannon of Warkworth netted three to 7lb 14oz for 14lb 5oz and Blyth angler Stu Younger had 11.

Paul Runec and Ben Race from Great Ayton had 11 and 16 respectively, with Ben keeping four to 7lb 10oz for 17lb 4oz. …
