Eagles Star: The British League Is Stronger Than Ever

DREW Lasker has seen the British Basketball League develop throughout his career and now believes it is stronger than ever.

But little do the Newcastle Eagles fans know of how the 32-year-old ended up on Tyneside and how he managed to achieve the success that his career has been showered in.

The Houston-born point guard didn't have the usual path into the sport as most players do.

Lasker began his early basketball career in Mainz, Germany, where he grew up and first found his love for the game.

And he had to work hard to make it as a professional, which was only possible after a glittering college career.

He said: "I lived in Germany from when I was five to about eight years old, and my mum signed me and a childhood friend up to a local basketball club. "I knew basketball was the sport for me and when I moved back to America, I started to take it very seriously.

"America is a basketball culture, it's sort of like everyone plays soccer over here, everyone plays basketball and everyone in America dribbles the basketball so I played every single day."

And from playing every day, the Texan developed the skills that were good enough for him to excel at high school level and earn a place at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Here Lasker, whose sporting hero is the great Michael Jordan, went from strength to strength at the ocean-front San Diego college.

He added: "Playing college basketball was an amazing experience. "It was a dream of mine as a little kid so I felt extremely proud to defeat the odds which were stacked highly against me.

"For a competitor like myself, college ball is great because, unlike high school, everyone can play on the college level.

"And to play in a city like San Diego, California, was awesome and was the best four years of my life."

College opened a lot of doors for Lasker, who travelled the world instead of staying in the US to pursue his goal. …
