SANTIAGO Vergini's Argentina snub is good news for Sunderland as they look to nurse their depleted defence through the international break.

The 26-year-old was not selected in Gerardo Martino's squad for this month's friendlies against Croatia and Portugal. Now Argentina have confirmed uncapped Sporting Lisbon full-back Jonathan Silva will replace Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo, who dislocated his shoulder at Eastlands at the weekend.

While it is a blow to the player, his Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet could be excused a sigh of relief.

Vergini has been in erratic form this season but his versatility has made him indispensable to a defensive unit which has struggled to cope with injuries this season. The 26-year-old sat out the opening match of the season at West Bromwich Albion but has started every match since, playing in every defensive position.

With Patrick van Aanholt, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones injured, Vergini is one of only four senior defenders available. Under-21s Tom Robson and Tom Beadling - a leftback and a centre-half - have been training with the first team recently, but when asked why no youngsters had been called up to boost the numbers on a matchday, Poyet explained there were none good enough in the positions he was short of.

Sunderland will work on Coates and Jones during the international break in the hope they can be fit for the trip to Leicester City on November 22. Centre-back Coates, on loan from Liverpool, is expected back sooner, but with only 45 minutes of competitive football since the World Cup, it will take him longer to get his match fitness up to standard to play in the Premier League.

A lack of options meant Poyet had little choice but to play Vergini at Southampton last month, days after returning from international duty in Hong Kong. …
