'No Frills' Camping Gets Okay

PRIVATE landowners could host paying campers under changes to Sunshine Coast Council policy but will have to pay at least $400 first.

The council quietly passed an interim policy on "limited facilities camping" two months ago.

The policy allows landowners to host fee-paying, self-contained campers. Hosts must first apply for an accommodation park licence, valid for 12 months, and pay application fees of at least $400.

They must also provide a minimum number of toilets and showers - one toilet for every seven females and one for every 10 men, plus a urinal, for up to 20 sites.

Stays will be limited and the council will carry out random inspections to ensure compliance.

The policy is intended to address the need for no-frills camping spots, but the co-founder of a private land camping website said the interim policy did not go far enough.

Prue Woodford, who launched youcamp.com with her husband, James, said more needed to be done to reduce red tape for private landholders wanting to host campers. …
