STUDENTS met an old classmate and pilot after he flew in to visit on his helicopter.

A former pupil of a St Thomas More Academy in North Shields, Lieutenant Ian Brannighan, 35, travelled on his Lynx Mark 8 from the Royal Naval Air Station in Somerset.

He arrived at the school with his navigator Lieutenant Alex Tuckwood. T Students were able to look inside the chopper and chat to the crew about life in the skies.

"This will be the first time I've managed to get back to the school where my brother, my sister and I were all educated and where it all started for me," said Lieutenant Brannighan.

He added: "I'm happy to finally have the chance to achieve this visit, as it's not easy to bring the Royal Navy to the North East outside of the Sunderland Airshow, or the visit of our ship HMS Dauntless."

The father-of-two attended St Thomas More from 1990 until 1997. He has attempted to visit previously with the helicopter. …
