Goss a Superb Leader Who Was Good for City

FORMER Queensland Premier Wayne Goss has been hailed as an outstanding parliamentary performer and a Labor leader who did plenty of positive things for Ipswich.

Mr Goss, 63, has died after a long battle with illness and several operations for brain tumours. Former Ipswich West MP Don Livingstone served under Mr Goss after Labor won power in 1989 after 32 years in opposition.

He said Mr Goss "was a very good debater and without a doubt, in my time in parliament, he was the best parliamentary performer on his feet".

"Nobody could have had more respect for him than I did."

Mr Livingstone, the government whip under Mr Goss, recalled the former premier's work ethic and the long nights in parliament as the government brought in legislative change.

"There was so much change after 32 years in opposition," Mr Livingstone said.

"The Nationals looked down their nose at us because a lot of them felt we had no right to be in government. …
