ANDY CARROLL today gave an insight into just how low he sank following serious injury during the summer -- and promised to make an impact now he is back. The striker's West Ham career has been punctuated by injury with the latest being the ankle damage he suffered in pre-season. Carroll (left) came on for his first appearance of the campaign late in the goalless draw with Aston Villa and almost snatched the winner.

"I was so down in the dumps during the summer," he said. "I was kicking myself that I was injured again and asking, 'why me?' "I flew from pre-season tour in New Zealand to Boston to see the specialist and he told me I needed surgery. It was a case of, 'not again -- how long will I be out this time?' "It never crossed my mind it would be the end of my career -- I will always fight on to the end. …
