Elderly Patient Dies after Choking in Third Food Blunder at Hospital

A PATIENT who was on a puree diet died a week after he was fed the wrong food in a London hospital.

The man in his 70s had been prescribed the diet by doctors at Croydon University Hospital but was given solid food by mistake and started choking. He died a week later and a coroner is now investigating the exact cause of his death.

It is the third such incident at the hospital since July this year involving staff feeding patients incorrect food.

In September, a man in his late 40s who was also on a puree diet was fed a sandwich by mistake.

In another case, a male patient who was nil by mouth was given soup. He started having serious breathing difficulties but later recovered. Trust bosses have now issued a warning to staff at the hospital to be extra vigilant when giving food to patients.

The three incidents took place on different wards and were nearly all triggered by forms being filled in incorrectly. …
