Bridge Gone despite Fear over Safety

A FOOTBRIDGE close to a Teesside primary school has been removed despite concerns the move could lead to fatalities.

The footbridge, at Ayresome Green Lane between Carlow Street and Archibald School, was taken down by engineers on Monday night and will be scrapped.

Middlesbrough Council agreed to pull down the structure after the introduction of pedestrian and cycle crossing four years ago.

The authority said the new crossing - introduced to improve safety for pupils of Archibald Primary School - has led to a slump in numbers using the bridge.

The demolition began at around 7pm, and Ayresome Green Lane and Heywood Street were closed to ensure the bridge could be removed safely.

Diversions were put in place and remained until 6am.

The removal of the bridge has not been without controversy.

Gresham Independent councillor Sajaad Khan called for an "urgent rethink" on the decision. …
