CRICKET: Two of Gympie's top cricketers have been rewarded with selection in the open South Queensland Country side after strong performances for Wide Bay at last weekend's Schaeffer Shield in Gatton.

Max Carlton, Kaden Dickfos and Lewis Waugh made up a strong Gympie contingent in the Wide Bay side, and while the team didn't perform well, Dickfos and Waugh stood out to selectors and were the only Wide Bay players picked for South Queensland at the conclusion of the two-day tournament.

In the first match against a combined Darling Downs and South West Queensland side, Dickfos had figures of 1-32 opening the bowling, but the opposition's score of 6-233 off 50 overs was always going to be a tough one to chase.

After being in trouble early at 2-9, Waugh led the fightback from the top of the order with a 93-run third-wicket partnership with Fraser Coast's Paul Sanders.

When Waugh was eventually out for 53, Wide Bay crumbled and lost their remaining seven wickets for 54 to be all out for 156, although Carlton (24) put up a good fight. …
