FOOTBALL: Local rising star Brad Mills has had the opportunity to put his skills to the test against some of the best young soccer players in the country, representing Queensland Country at the FFA National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour.

The 13-year-old, who has played for Golden City in the Gympie competition since under-6 and represented Wide Bay Revolution for two years, was identified along with fellow Gympie talent Eligh Williams to attend the selection trials in Townsville.

While goalkeeper Williams was unlucky to miss out on final selection for the squad, Mills' excellent one v one skills made him a good choice for the position of left wing for the U13 Queensland Country side.

With players from Toowoomba, Cairns, Mackay, Townsville and Wide Bay, most who had never met each other before the trials, the team travelled to Coffs Harbour five days before the tournament started for some valuable training time together.

Placed in Group B, which also included New South Wales Country, NSW Northern Country, Northern Territory, Tasmania and Victoria Country, Queensland Country came away with one win, one draw and three hard-fought losses, earning plenty of praise for their style of football along the way. …
