Numbers Down but Plenty of Limit Bags at Lockwood; ANGLING

Article excerpt

ROD numbers have been a lot lower than normal during the first week of bait fishing at Lockwood Beck, but 38 anglers still caught their four-fish limits and only 14 failed to catch.

As well as trout, a lot of roach and perch were caught and returned as maggot and swim feeder accounted for a lot of fish.

Anglers fishing worm and PowerBait cocktail have had less trouble with roach and are catching some nice fish, while fly anglers have found a lot of fish close in along the moorside bank.

Guisborough angler Tom Roe bagged the catch of the week, a 4lb 12oz rainbow.

Lockwood will be open for fly and bait fishing from 9am to 4pm during the winter season. Prices for permits are PS20 per eight fish limit, PS10 for a junior four fish and fly only sporting and PS5 boat hire.

Returns: 67 bait and 16 fly anglers caught 276 rainbows to 4lb 12oz and 34 browns to 3lb.

MIXED weather gov-|erned by strong winds, showers and occasional periods of sunshine kept the fish in deeper waters at Scaling Dam for most of last week.

That failed to prevent Loftus angler Andy Moscrop from catching a 10-fish haul as he fly fished along the south shore. He was rewarded with nine rainbows, three of which were safely returned, along with a brown.

John Magson of Middlesbrough had a good day fishing ledgered worm at the east end where he bagged five rainbows, while Richard Warburton of Redcar had a fantastic loyalty day to catch eight rainbows fishing ledgered worm and PowerBait at the big tree.

That was a bite for every cast and he was confident he could have caught his 10 fish limit, but decided eight were heavy enough to carry home as they were all around 2lb.

Fishing times are now 9am-3pm, to reflect the shorter hours, and a reduced price of PS16 for a full permit with increased catch limit of 10 fish. A family permit has been reduced to PS23 for 15 fish. THE weather contin-|ued to be miserable at Jubilee Lakes last week, but the fishing was generally better than the previous week.

The best patterns have been Foam Daddy Long Legs, Black Beetle, Black Buzzer, Bloodworm, Black Zonker and Peach Blob. …
