THINK Sparx Hyne was no longer a title contender? Think again.

Sparx Hyne has bounced back into the winner's list in emphatic style, handing Aztecs Apaches their first loss of the Maryborough Softball season.

Just one week after losing to Incas Mercury, the reigning premiers used a late rally to account for Apaches, claiming an 11-5 victory during Round 5 of the women's competition on Saturday.

In a match that saw some terrific catching, Reen Paea's double to bring home Nik-Cole Paea helped Apaches level the scores 5-5 at the bottom of the last inning.

But Hyne showed enough composure under pressure to claim victory, with Jill Genrich dashing to home base for the winning run following an error in the Apaches infield.

Hyne went on to score a further five runs in the inning with the final scoreline not a real indication of how close the match was.

Mercury, meanwhile, continued its hot run in the competition, using a six-run opening frame blitz to defeat Sparx Sirens 14-4. …
