Clarence River Gets out of Jail; Tougher Quarter-Final Looming

CLARENCE River's bowling attack stuck to its guns to defeat Manning River by a mere 24 runs in the third round of the statewide Country Shield knockout on Sunday.

In a low-scoring affair, Clarence was bowled out for 146 on a slow Ellem Oval surface, opener Tim Tilse top scoring with 45.

The total did not look enough as Manning cruised at seven runs per over at the start of its run chase.

But Clarence's pace attack persisted in the heat after lunch, Brad Chard (2 for 41 off 10) and Brayden Pardoe (4 for 22 off 4.1) cashing in as Brendan Cleaver (3 for 27 off 10) dried up the runs from the other end.

Captain Bob McKenzie, who made a quickfire 26 before holing out in the deep off the bowling of spinner Rick Campbell (4 for 21 off 4.5), said a vast improvement with the bat would be required to defeat Lismore in the quarter-final on November 30. …
