Young Athlete Sets Sights on Higher Honour

TRIATHLON: Jade Bidgood is a star on the rise.

The 16-year-old took part in the Hamilton Island Triathlon at the weekend, finishing 18th overall and fourth in the highly competitive 14-19-year-old category.

Bidgood finished the event with a time of 1:14:14.

This is the 16-year-old's sixth triathlon -- having only taken up the sport in March.

"The day went pretty good," he said.

"It was probably one of the best swims I've done, I'm originally a runner and have just gotten into cycling and haven't done too much swimming."

One of the biggest challenges Bidgood said he faced when beginning triathlons was just the continuos and long-term physical exertion of a race.

Bidgood said although his times for the run and ride legs were not as good as normal, the course was tough and quite hilly.

The young triathlete is now preparing for the state trials in February in Hervey Bay.

"I've only got two more weeks of school left, after that in summer holidays it will just be eat, sleep, train, repeat," Bidgood said. …
