THE Queensland Ambulance Service has told how ordinary calls for assistance can turn nasty at any moment as one paramedic recovers from a kick to the stomach by an agitated patient.

Sunshine Coast operations Superintendent Neil Reid said assaults were an unacceptable yet unfortunate part of the job.

"We have a zero tolerance for people who deliberately assault paramedics," Supt Reid said.

"We are asking the community to understand we are out their serving them."

An ambulance crew was called to a home at Montville on Saturday where a woman had suffered a stroke.

But when they attempted to treat the 46-year-old, she kicked out at the crew, hitting the paramedic.

It is believed two police officers were needed to restrain the woman in the back of the ambulance and five staff were needed to sedate her in hospital.

A Police Media spokeswoman confirmed police had received a formal complaint and were investigating. …
