Labor Can't Bear Upgrade Route

LABOR leader John Robertson has backed calls for the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade to be re-routed to save a nationally significant koala population.

"NSW Labor's position is that we want to see the road re-routed. At the very least the minister has to go out and do a costing of using the existing corridor. Watching koala populations across the nation ever decline, to allow this road to take this route would be irresponsible," Mr Robertson said.

Ballina councillor Jeff Johnson and Friends of the Koala president Lorraine Vass went to Sydney this week to lobby to have the preferred highway route changed to protect a koala population in the Blackwall Range. They presented a petition with more than 3000 signatures calling for Roads Minister Duncan Gay to reconsider the route.

"By using the existing highway corridor it could be done sooner, cheaper, and avoid the environmentally sensitive area," Cr Johnson said. …
