A PARANOID schizophrenic tried to kill a 62-year-old man in his home, attacking him with a tyre lever while "pumped up like a Neanderthal".

James Raymond Baxter, 24, has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act after he randomly attacked two people on their doorsteps.

The burly former amateur boxer's terrifying assaults included a murderous attack on Albert Maughan, 62.

Baxter sought lethal revenge against a friend who he claimed had attacked him with a machete, Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday.

He was hallucinating and thought the two victims of his unprovoked assaults were "manifestations" of his intended quarry, he later said.

Bleeding profusely from a wound to his hand, he assaulted two innocent residents standing outside their homes on Weastell Street, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.

In both attacks, Baxter was dragged off by two unknown young men who tried to tell him his target was not there on the evening of May 16.

Prosecutor Adrian Dent said that Baxter first went up to a 41-year-old man and punched him three or four times to the head.

He forced his way into the man's home, pulled his T-shirt over his head and kept on punching him.

Baxter then attacked Mr Maughan, immediately breaking his jaw in four places with one blow.

He kicked his door off its hinges, stormed into the kitchen and repeatedly punched him again.

He picked up a tyre lever, hit Mr Maughan to the head, back and body with it, and bit his arm.

When police handcuffed and arrested him, he said: "Machete." He later remarked: "I think I've killed him."

He told officers he would have killed Mr Maughan if he had not been pulled away.

And he said he was "really pumped up like a Neanderthal" at the time.

Baxter, of Crescent Road, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault causing actual bodily harm. …
