THESE are the budding bobbies pounding the beat and cracking down on crime.

Dressed in their uniforms, the half-pint cadets have been supporting officers in Durham City. Durham's "mini police" have helped out at royal visits, attended an awards ceremony and will volunteer at this year's Christmas festival.

The children, between eight and 10, are all recruited from primary schools near to Durham.

"It's great to have them on board," said PC Craig Johnson, who heads up the mini police. "If we engage with the children when they are nine, 10 and 11-years-old it makes things much easier in the future. We are putting the investment in now.
