Byline: LINDSAY BRUCE The chaotic life of a working mum

I'VE relented. Christmas has come to the Bruce household.

I know, I know, it's far too early.

Yep, it's not even December yet, but thanks to a well-meaning friend and the gift of a cinnamon candle I couldn't help myself. Don't worry it's perfectly dignified thus far. No tinsel, no flashing lights. I've even managed to control my urge to replace all my cushions with Santa covers (tasteful homemade ones don't you know. Don't judge me!).

I have, however, started making incessant lists. Lists of what has to be taken to the loft to make room for the Christmas extravaganza set to take over the house, lists of what has to be excavated from the loft, lists of presents, lists of what to pack for the top secret holiday, lists about the lists I have to write...

Second option is from a local greengrocer. Apparently they are the best for miles, a good price and support local business. That ticks all my boxes for sure.

Mr B, on the other hand, is trying to rig the votes in favour of option number three. Why? Because it's free and involves us hiking up the hills behind our house and chopping down a tree from the local wood. …
