Garden Grows Morethanfood; Dicky Beach Community Get Hands Dirty

THE Dicky Beach community sure is good at turning nothing into something.

Sick of the bare patches of land on the corner of Beerburrum and Henzell Sts, locals decided to take matters into their own hands and plant a community garden.

But their plan was uprooted when council requested that the garden to be removed.

"Basically, council left a couple pieces of land on the footpath free," Community Network spokesman Graham Eastick said.

"So, we decided we were going to buy some vegetables and start to create the community garden.

"What we didn't know is that we needed a permit to do that."

Mr Eastick said that once they addressed the council's health and safety concerns - and followed the correct procedure - their plan for a new garden was approved.

Local business owner Jennifer Kater couldn't be happier with the decision to replant the garden, which is located at the front of her cafe, The Giggling Goat.

"We are going ahead, we are replanting everything we had to pull out," she said. …
