Austria Mosque Raids 'Round Up Recruiters for IS'

AUSTRIAN police and intelligence agencies today swooped on mosques and prayer rooms in an operation targeting suspected Islamist extremists. Ten people were arrested in the raids in Vienna, Graz and Linz and warrants were issued for 25 more people.

The Austrian prosecution service spoke of rounding up people suspected of radicalising young Muslims to fight with the forces of Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria.

The interior ministry co-ordinated the raids on 40 flats, prayer rooms and mosques. All the officers involved were heavily armed and were told they might encounter resistance.

An unidentified Bosnian was reported to be behind the campaign to radicalise young Muslims. He is described as a father-of-five who lives on state benefits and preaches at secret gatherings about the "duty" to fight for IS.

It was unclear whether he was among those seized in today's operation, which began at 4am today. …
