No Publix Senior Discount in Florida

Dear Call Box: I read in the Wall Street Journal that Publix offers a 5 percent senior discount on Wednesdays. I live in Jacksonville and have been unable to find a Publix here that offers a discount, and no one seems to know anything about it.

Dear A.B.: Senior discounts are not offered in the Florida area, said Dwaine Stevens, Publix spokesman. They are offered in the Atlanta market, which includes portions of Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, for competitive reasons, he said. But Stevens said in an email that Publix strives to deliver premier shopping experiences in all of its markets and considers the reader a valued customer.

This question also was raised on Facebook with Publix officials responding that they use promotional methods such as buy-one-get-one-free items and that their strategy of having good sale ads offers customers a better overall value.

Dear Call Box: There was something in Call Box last week about Thrill Hill. I think there was also a Thrill Bridge over in San Marco. It was just this little bridge, but you could go airborne by hitting it at a certain speed.

Dear J.J.: You are correct, though like the former Thrill Hill, your tires now stay on the ground. Thrill Bridge is on River Road and crosses the canal that leads from the St. Johns River into Lake Marco, a former clay pit transformed into an artificial lake.

Robin Robinson, president of the Jacksonville Historical Society, said it was modeled after the arched bridges that grace the canals in Venice.

"I think that's why the bridge had such a high pitch to it," Robinson said.

The name San Marco came from Piazza San Marco, Venice's principal public square.

When her husband was in high school in the late 1950s, he, like many others, would cross the bridge at a high speed and go airborne, she said. …
