Golfers Tee off after Wet Start to Children's Games

CLARENCE Valley athletes endured a wet and wild opening ceremony at the International Children's Games taking place at Lake Macquarie.

The highly anticipated showcase ended prematurely on Sunday as children aged 12 to 15 from 88 cities in 33 countries fled to shelter from untimely storms.

"A massive storm cancelled the opening ceremony with about an hour of festivities to go," Clarence Valley golf team coach Trevor Townsend said.

"There was horrendous lightning and a deluge of rain; you couldn't have scripted it worse. The poor kids were slipping over on stage."

But as the saying goes, the show must go on as athletes competed in various events yesterday, including at Waratah Golf Club where Clarence Valley duo Willow Harris and Courtney Fuller teed off against 40 players from all over the world.

Courtney, 15, played alongside a local Lake Macquarie player and a girl from Chesterfield in California, USA. …
