IF YOU prepare a Christmas list for presents, what have you included for your grandparents?

If you intend to buy them a pup for a Christmas present, remember the song from Patti Page, "How much is that doggie in the window?"

Don't worry about the price of the pup, more important are the costs for your grandparents to maintain a dog.

I'll give you some examples using our dog, Cosi.

Cosi has an annual check-up which costs about $200; Cosi has her teeth cleaned annually which costs about $350.

Then there are the pills and shampoos that cost us about $300.

Add all of the above, which comes to about $800 per year and this does not take into consideration unforeseen expenses.

If your grandparents cannot afford a dog, give them a canary.

It would be a lot cheaper to maintain and less demanding of attention.

There are rules for dogs, but the rules are actually for dog owners. …
