CROOKS in the North East are getting a special Christmas keep out of jail card.

The greetings are being sent out in a bid to make would-be thieves think twice about turning to crime over the festive period.

The Christmas cards will be dropping through the letterboxes of the 350 most prolific thieves in the region to let them know they are on the crime-fighting radar.

It is the initiative of the North East Retail Crime Partnership which warns on it: "Spend your Christmas at home, not in a cell."

They are being sent out now and the card informs them that the NERCP network including retailers and police, share information on them and will be looking out for them particularly throughout the festive season.

Sarah Dougherty, manager of the NERCP, said: "We're running this initiative in partnership with North East retailers and participating police forces in a bid to tackle the displacement of retail crime throughout the region. …
