Jail Hit Is Prison Culture; Open Season on Child Sex Offenders, Inmate Tells All to District Court

AN UNOFFICIAL prisoner code of conduct applies at the Capricornia Correctional Centre when child sex offenders roam the grounds, Rockhampton District Court heard yesterday.

Gladstone man Anthony Lee Smits, 27, yesterday pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm and three serious assault charges.

Defence barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said Smits told him it was "part of prison culture" to set upon inmates who had child-sex and exploitation offences to their name.

On May 1, Smits found out a fellow inmate had received a letter about child exploitation material.

The court heard the inmate (victim) was dragged into the correctional centre's exercise yard, where Smits and two other men beat him.

The blows by Smits and his co-offenders knocked a tooth out of the victim and left him with a fractured nose.

Smits was arrested earlier this year after biting a Gladstone police officer's arm. …
