THE serious downturn in weather conditions has obviously affected angling this week, but some hardy souls have managed to better both the weather and the fish.

Despite overnight frosts, this week has still seen some cracking fishing on The Angel complex with ide, roach and bream and skimmers being the main species caught, most falling to maggot or groundbait feeder fished in deeper water.

Fishing the pole has seen good mixed bags caught on Bowes lake, while on Lookout lake pellet fished in a cloud of groundbait can get you some bonus carp.

Winter fishing on Leazes Park in Newcastle city centre has been productive for roach, perch and rudd, with Steve Woods taking 6lb and Malcolm Macdonald 10lb using the waggler before the weather changed for the worse.

The final North East Winter League match was fished on the River Tees at Yarm on Sunday, where Geoff Douglas took top spot with 13lb 9oz of roach and perch, caught on maggot and worm.

Tommy Marshall of Washington was runner-up with 11lb 2oz and Dave Harris third on 10lb 11oz. Maver Newman Scotts won the team event on the day and duplicated their success by being declared Final League champions, with the Mosella Quaker side runner-up and Daiwa Cleveland Angling Centre in third.

Alex McDermot was the winner of Sunday's match on The Angel with 20lb 13oz followed by Chris Pine on 16lb 15oz and John Foster with 16lb 1oz.

Sunday's match on Aldin Grange was won by Alf Snowdon with a very creditable 38lb 8oz from peg 26 George. Dodd was runner-up on 8lb 8oz, while Dave Barrett and Jimmy Stevenson tied for third, both recording 5lb 12oz.

Carpvale in North Yorkshire does not see that many competitions fished on it, but a match on Sunday saw the Cyprio Pool yield 26 carp for 111lb 6oz to Dave Wright.
