LAST week saw the final group matches in the Champions League and, despite some fairly average performances, three of the four Premier League sides advanced to the group stages.

The odd ones out were mis-firing Liverpool.

They were outplayed on the pitch and also despite the much publicised atmosphere at Anfield they were out-sung by the Swiss supporters.

In the last 20 minutes the team and the Kop finally came to life, though it was too little, too late and their cause wasn't helped by the dismissal of their substitute Lazar Markovic.

His red card led to former Boro player turned pundit Andy Townsend and commentator Clive Tyldesley castigating both the Basel player who went to ground and also the match referee.

I was - not for the first time - left fuming in front of my TV at the ignorance of the comments that are given to the watching viewer.

Okay, the contact didn't look too severe and the opponent made a lot of it,.

But, as any Sunday League footballer will know, striking or attempting to strike an opponent is classed as violent conduct and the player has to be sent off. …
