RUGBY LEAGUE: If playing in a state-wide under-16 competition is the first step towards Queensland Cup and NRL footy, five players from the Southern Downs are giving it a good shot.

Will Dearden (Collegians), Kai Etherington (Eastern Suburbs), Thomas Duggan (Wattles), Lachlan Hendry (Stanthorpe) and Corey Rashleigh are in the Clydesdales training squad for the 2015 Cyril Connell Cup competition.

Clydesdales coaching director/head coach Chris McEwan said the squad was initially 45 and was now 39.

"The players are really enthusiastic so there are a few tough decisions to come as the rules of the competition will only let us register 25 players," he said.

"The Clydesdales can move players in and out of the 25. Most years, we use 30.

"At this level, it is a case of selecting the best players so we are competitive in what is a Queensland selection trial.
