Council Relents on Pet Laws Animal Lovers Win as Council Re-Drafts Pet Laws; Animal Owners Happy with Result

CLARENCE Valley pet owners are claiming a win after mounting a campaign against proposed changes to animal keeping regulations.

Grafton aviarist John Minshull said Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson has conceded some of council's proposed changes had gone too far.

Mr Minshull, who runs 30 aviaries from his Powell St home and has a number of cockatoos in his care, was fearful the proposed changes would limit the number of birds he could keep.

"It's my hobby, it's what I love doing," he said. "Why would council want to take that away from me?"

Council staff drafted a proposed animal keeping policy following a council resolution at its October meeting.

Cr Williamson said he met with Mr Minshull earlier this week to discuss his concerns.

He confirmed he told Mr Minshull the council will consider re-drafting the proposed regulations and bring them back to council early next year. …
