A Hobby That Ticks All the Right Boxes

LES Burger has been tinkering and building his entire life.

At the age of 23, he built a home for himself and his new bride, Barbara.

Since then, he has used his handyman skills to craft everything from cabinets to bars, to an entire kitchen.

With retirement from a long and successful career in mechanical engineering, you might say Les was left with even more time on his hands.

So much, in fact, that he has built up a healthy collection of timber clocks.

Sitting in his Karalee home, listening to the ticking of 250 clocks built by his own two hands, Mr Burger said it didn't take long to find inspiration.

"I came across some clocks at a tourist organisation," Mr Burger said.

"I thought to myself 'I can do that!' and that's how it started."

Practicality runs in the family, with Mr Burger learning a lot from his old man while growing up in the Maroon area, south of Boonah.

"My dad could cut down a tree, make himself a guitar and then teach himself how to play it," Mr Burger said. …
