WHEN we were young, our mother never missed an opportunity to tell us that we must always dress well and that our presentation must be "immaculate".

There were plenty of times, whilst listening to this sermon, that I had an almost-uncontrollable urge to ask her how we were supposed to dress well when spending money on clothes was seen as frivolous and unnecessary.

Make-up was also not allowed.

Her way of discouraging us from wanting to wear make-up was to tell us that only ugly girls - and prostitutes - wore make-up. I always suspected that the real reason had something to do with money.

I suppose she wanted us to always look presentable when we went out - because you never know who was watching you.

Last week when I was taking my dogs for their afternoon run, I found a good "crop" of parthenium weed growing along the road - on the other side of the road.

Being the good corporate citizen that I (sometimes) am, I went home, got a bag and went back, carefully pulled it all out and put it in the bag. …
