A VERY happy New Year to everyone and we wish you a good gardening season, with lots of gorgeous colour, and no pests or diseases to worry about.

As most folk know, there are hosts of new plants appearing in the garden centres every season and if you, like us, are keen gardeners, you sometimes feel you almost need an extension to your property to fit in all those that appeal to you.

So, with that in mind, we're going to introduce a few of the new releases over the coming weeks to tempt you, and perhaps make some suggestions about displaying them in your garden.

The new Nandina domestica Gulf Stream is a most effective plant for almost any part of the garden, due to its super hardiness and being an attractive plant all-year round.

Gulf Stream provides a lovely fresh appearance, is ideal as a feature shrub and makes a great low hedge, as the colouring changes in the cooler months. Growing 75cm tall and 50cm wide, it does equally well in full sun to part shade, and amazingly tolerates a wide range of soils.

Whether you prefer traditional European, Balinese, Japanese or contemporary garden styles, this will suit all of them equally well. It would also be suitable as a garden divider or low hedge, and would be ideal planted down the drive, providing a very neat entrance to your property.

A good suggestion in this instance would be to select where you wish to plant some Gulf Streams, allowing sufficient space in front to grow the new chrysanthemum Leurette Fifi Hot Pink that are due to be released in February.

These chryssies have been termed show-stoppers - a most suitable description for such stunningly coloured clusters of hot pink petals with bright yellow centres covering the compact, low-growing and floriferous plants. …
