THE development of a purpose-built lab at the University of Bedfordshire gives psychology students access to state-of-the-art facilities, including equipment that can investigate aspects of brain functioning. Designed to further enhance the students' experience while at Bedfordshire -- an institution where they already gain knowledge from worldleading expert lecturers and profit from being on courses accredited by the prestigious British Psychological Society -- the newly installed lab will allow students to learn about underlying brain mechanisms of visual attention, memory and language functions.

The ERP (event-related potential) equipment utilises a brain-mapping technique called electroencephalography, which involves measuring the electrical activity of the brain via scalp electrodes, leading to the investigation of cognitive processing.

The experiments performed in the lab track changes during the performance of cognitive tasks, and allow researchers to investigate what is going on inside our heads during sensory perception, selective attention, object recognition, and more.

At the University of Bedfordshire, psychology is not taught purely as a theoretical subject, but rather the emphasis is on how it applies to real life situations. In total there are eight courses within the psychology department, and each confers eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society. Recognised as providing a starting point for a career in psychology, graduate membership will increase students' employability, providing them with a qualification that employers understand and value.

The university's department of psychology is also committed to underpinning undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with research conducted by its own academic staff, all of whom are members of the university's Research Centre for Applied Psychology.

For example, the work of Gail Kinman, professor of occupational health psychology, has had worldwide impact. Professor Kinman is director of the Research Centre for Applied Psychology, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on work-related stress, work-life balance, emotional labour and emotional literacy and how they influence the well-being of employees, with her research published widely and regularly presented at national and international conferences and featured in the press and radio.

PRACTICE-BASED STUDY The content of the psychology courses at the University of Bedfordshire is very much practice-based.

Students apply the psychological theories learned to real-life situations and to a wide range of important and topical day-to-day issues, such as eating disorders, how to teach mathematics to children, problems with eyewitness testimony and the origins of prejudice and stereotyping. …
