IN A rebellious move, some Clarence Valley students are giving school the flick to pursue more enjoyable activities: hanging out at the library.

Reports to The DEX revealed youth were bunking down in the library instead of attending class.

Clarence Valley Council environment, planning and community director Des Schroder said council was conscious truants from schools were using library facilities.

"We don't have a policing role on truancy, but we do work with police and education authorities who do sweeps of the library facilities," Mr Schroder said.

"We are responsible for the behaviour of people once they are in the libraries and are generally comfortable with children being there.

"While it is no doubt preferable for those of school age to attend school, at least if they are in the library they are in a secure environment, supervised, behave properly and are not roaming the streets. …
