I'M not normally one for making New Year resolutions.

They're a lot easier said than done.

In fact, I'm willing to bet that many of you who made a resolution have probably already started to waver a bit, despite your best intentions.

I liken it to starting a brand new school exercise book - you always wrote on the first page in your neatest handwriting, until you made a mistake and had to cross something out, then you scrawled in the rest of it with reckless abandon.

New Year is supposed to be a wonderfully optimistic time; time for a fresh start, a clean slate, a blank page in your new exercise book.

It is also the worst time to make wholesale changes to your life.

January is a dull and dreary month as it is, never mind if you've just gone cold turkey on the seasonal indulgences.

Winter is designed for comfort food, not fad diets doomed to fail the first time you give in and have a chocolate digestive.

Cut yourself a bit of slack - don't resolve to go to the gym every day just because it's New Year; you won't keep it up and you'll only feel guilty. …
