CARRYING a 15kg backpack on a hike sounds hard enough, but William Nuss is training to carry his to Mount Everest Base Camp.

William, 17, is one for four students that have started training to climb to Mount Everest Base Camp, as part of an initiative with the Central Queensland Health and Hospital Service to get residents to think about their health.

And William is up for the challenge.

Over the Christmas holidays his training got under way by carrying a 15kg weight pack on a trek at Carnarvon Gorge, but William said he still has a long way to go when it comes to fitness.

William, who is from Sapphire, began official training on Saturday at Vector Health in Rockhampton with the other students.

Vector Health owner Glenn Hansen is ready to get the teens in shape for the trek and has experience in just how to do that.

Glenn said he previously trained someone to climb not only to the base camp, but to the top of Mount Everest. …
